Praxis I Tests for Teachers
Candidates for Maine teaching certificates must achieve passing scores on
the Praxis I tests of basic skills, also known as the PPST or
Pre-professional Skills Test. The Praxis I test consists of three
subtests, with multiple choice questions in reading, writing and math plus
an essay. The Educational Testing Service, publishers
of the Praxis I
tests, provides
sample tests online (to see these Tests, click on this link and scroll

Passing scores for the test are different for certificates requiring a
bachelors’ degree and for those which do not. Each state sets its own
passing scores, and the passing scores for Maine are among the highest in

Fees for the Praxis I test include a
required $40 registration fee for each test date, plus $30 for each of the
three subtests for the paper-and-pencil test. Fees for the computerized
version of the test include the $40 registration fee, plus $85 for each of
the three subtests, with a discounted fee of $120 for three subtests if
