ESEA/NCLB: An Introduction

On January 8, 2002, President Bush signed into law the new Elementary and Secondary Act (ESEA), a federal law first enacted in 1965. The law is also known as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.

The ESEA is a wide-ranging law over 1,000 pages long. Among the major components are:

An accountability system for all schools that receive Title I funds.

A new set of national standards for employment as a teacher or ed tech in public schools.
